SCI & SCIF Meet With Head U.S. CITES Delegate

Last Thursday, SCIF & SCI’s Washington staff met with the Department of Interior’s Deputy Assistant Secretary to discuss the most important issues to be raised at the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES next week in Doha, Qatar.  At the top of the list is the proposed establishment of a definition of the term “hunting trophy,” which could have huge implications for hunters shipping trophies internationally.  SCI and SCIF were the only organizations to identify this problem and raise the need to address this issue with CITES and the U.S. Department of Interior leadership.  The Deputy Assistant Secretary was provided background on the hunting trophy definition, the problems, impacts, and possible solutions. The relevance and importance of this issue are now clear, as is the need to work with the United States and other CITES Parties to develop appropriate language that does not harm the hunting community.
